It’s Dictionary Day, yay! Or booyah…

Created in honour of Noah Webster, Dictionary Day is an opportunity to broaden our vocabulary and expand our language.

Noah certainly did! It might have taken 27 years to complete, but Webster’s An American Dictionary of the English Language included 12,000 words never before published in a dictionary. Noah also gave us the Americanisms “color” for “colour” and “center” for “centre”. But the less said about those the better.

Inspired by a client who last week called me their “go to Google for words”, here are a few dictionary entry suggestions of my own; the results either of ham-fisted typing or putting pen to paper on the dafter*.

  • *Dafter – day after pulling an all-nighter to meet a tight deadline
  • Eatster – time of year when you eat too much chocolate
  • Enail – rejection letter sent by email
  • Hippobottamus – seems appropriate, right?
  • Munchtime – anytime between meals when you fancy a snack
  • Wrotten – like ‘written’, but needs a whole lot more crafting

Time to broaden your purviews^…
