Mastering smoke

Ardbeg Distillery

Ardbeg Ardcore

In April, I was fortunate enough to visit the whisky isle of Islay on a project for soon to be reopened Port Ellen Distillery.

While there, I made the most of the opportunity – and the glorious weather – to ‘bag’ a few of the other distilleries I’ve written for over the years, including the producer of one of the smokiest malt whiskies of them all.

Ardbeg has been making its famously phenolic whisky on Islay for more than 200 years. Working with Contagious, I helped write the Ardbeg Masters of Smoke (MOS) bartender education programme.

After introducing the untamed isle where it’s made, MOS embarks on a rollercoaster ride through Ardbeg’s history and production. It then plunges headlong into the science of smoke using some uniquely Ardbeggian tasting tools, including a Peatyodic Table.
